Standard 2 Teachers know how children grow. The teacher understands how children with broad ranges of ability learn and provides instruction that supports their intellectual, social, and personal development. Evidence 1: Single of the Week Lesson Plan
Rationale 1: This lesson was created for an intermediate to advanced level of Spanish studying music. The objective of the lesson is for students to create an electronic presentation to be shown to the class that introduces them to an artist and song. The class will be divided into groups of four and each group will be assigned a week. During that week the group must download the free iTunes Canción de la semana (Single of the Week). They will need to listen to the song enough to familiarize themselves with the lyrics and style. Next, using the internet, the group must research the artist and music style. They will complete a research guide directing their search. As they are searching they will gather images that will be used in their presentation. Using Garage Band or Audacity, the group must record an introduction in Spanish for their presentation which identifies who they are, the title of the song and the artist and tells the audience something about what they are about to hear. Finally, using iMovie, iPhoto and iTunes (or Media Player, Movie Maker and Audacity) the group will create their presentation. The entire song must be used to create a music video with still photos, clip art, and transitions. The final product will be saved as .mov file to be viewed in Quicktime. The final product will be posted on the class blog where all students can view it. Viewing and evaluating each group’s video report will be one part of the assessment for the unit. Understanding and knowing the content of the presentation will be the second part of the assessment. This lesson was created during the iPod course and was intended to be done using Macs. I have since switched school districts and am now in a Windows environment. I have not taught the lesson yet, but it will be used during the last quarter of the school year as an out of class assignment in Spanish 5. Each group will be assigned a week and have two weeks to complete the assignment. This lesson will impact student learning because it connects students to the real world. Generally speaking, students enjoy listening to music and enjoy using technology. The nature of the group work will allow students with different strengths to be assigned different tasks. Watching the presentations and listening to what other groups have created will expose the students to a variety of music. The intent of the lesson is for students to find new music that they enjoy listening to and to recognize different styles of Spanish music. KSD 2.K.2 The teacher understands that students’ physical, social, emotional, moral, and cognitive development influence learning and knows how to address these factors when making instructional decisions. Students need to work in groups and need to be able to collaborate in group projects. This lesson allows for the students to verbalize their ideas with others and to hear the opinions of others. I will look at individual student development and address these factors when creating groups. 2.S.1 The teacher assesses individual and group performance in order to design instruction that meets learners’ current needs in each domain (cognitive, social, emotional, moral, and physical) and that leads to the next level of development. I will monitor the roles that students take within the group setting. Students that are strong in one particular area should be allowed to further explore that area, but not at the expense of learning something new or developing a weak area. 2.D.2 The teacher is disposed to use students’ strengths as a basis for growth, and their errors as an opportunity for learning. The students’ video presentations will be used as an evaluation tool. Students that have success in a project like this may benefit from additional projects or in class activities that incorporate technology design. On the same note, students that struggle will benefit from constructive criticism of their work and may gain additional insight by continuing to work on their projects.
